Specialty orders fail when basics run out. These six ingredients appear in nearly every home bakery recipe — keep them stocked with buffer.
The six essentials
All-purpose or cake flour, granulated sugar, unsalted butter, large eggs, pure vanilla extract, and baking powder/soda. If you bake chocolate regularly, add Dutch-process cocoa to the must-have list.
- Buy butter in bulk during holiday sales — freeze up to 6 months.
- Vanilla is your highest markup ingredient per use; don't substitute imitation in premium orders.
- Track eggs by count, not weight — recipes assume large eggs.
Set par levels in Bakekick
Enter each ingredient with a par level — the minimum quantity before you reorder. When stock drops below par, you get a low-stock alert.
Review par levels quarterly. Summer wedding season needs more butter than January.
